Vaginal Health
Vaginal health support & Vaginal microbiome testing
When something doesn’t feel right…
Maybe you've been experiencing recurrent thrush.
Maybe bacterial vaginosis keeps coming back, despite multiple rounds of treatment.
Maybe you've been told everything looks "normal", yet you're still dealing with irritation, discomfort, discharge, odour or symptoms that don't seem to make sense.
Maybe you've spent months, or even years, searching for answers.
Whatever has brought you here, welcome.
At Diamond Creek Natural Medicine Centre, we understand that vaginal health concerns can be frustrating, isolating and difficult to talk about. Many women have seen multiple practitioners before finding us, often feeling dismissed or told that their symptoms are simply something they need to live with.
We believe your symptoms deserve to be investigated properly.
Our role is to help you better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and provide individualised care that considers the broader picture of your health.
Vaginal health is about more than infection
The vaginal environment is a complex ecosystem.
Hormones, stress, immune function, the gut microbiome, menstrual cycles, sexual activity, medications, nutrition and overall health can all influence vaginal health.
For some women, symptoms develop following antibiotic use. For others, symptoms may emerge following pregnancy, hormonal changes, contraceptive use, periods of stress or seemingly without explanation.
The reality is that recurrent vaginal symptoms are often more complex than a simple infection.
Understanding why symptoms continue occurring is an important part of developing an effective treatment approach.
Common reasons women seek support
We regularly see women experiencing:
Recurrent thrush (Candida)
Recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV)
Persistent vaginal discharge
Vaginal irritation or discomfort
Burning sensations
Vaginal dryness
Odour concerns
Cytolytic vaginosis
Aerobic vaginitis
Ureaplasma
Mycoplasma
Vulvovaginal inflammation
Vaginal symptoms despite "normal" test results
Many women arrive feeling confused after receiving conflicting information or trying multiple treatments without lasting improvement.
Our approach begins by understanding your unique history and presentation.
Understanding the vaginal microbiome
The vaginal microbiome refers to the collection of microorganisms that naturally live within the vaginal environment.
A healthy vaginal microbiome is typically dominated by protective Lactobacillus species, which help maintain an environment that supports vaginal health.
When the balance of the microbiome changes, some women may become more vulnerable to symptoms such as recurrent thrush, bacterial vaginosis, irritation, discharge or odour.
Understanding what is happening within the vaginal microbiome can often provide valuable information that may not be visible through standard testing alone.
Vaginal microbiome testing
For some patients, vaginal microbiome testing can provide a deeper understanding of what may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.
These tests can help identify:
The balance of vaginal bacteria
Lactobacillus species
Bacterial overgrowth
Microbial diversity
Patterns that may contribute to recurrent symptoms
Testing does not replace clinical assessment, but it can provide valuable information that helps guide a more personalised approach to care.
Not everybody requires testing.
Part of our role is helping determine whether vaginal microbiome testing is likely to be useful in your circumstances.
Our approach
We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to vaginal health.
During your consultation we will take the time to understand:
Your symptom history
Previous diagnoses and treatments
Medical and reproductive history
Hormonal health
Menstrual cycle patterns
Digestive health
Sleep
Stress
Lifestyle factors
Relevant pathology and test results
We consider both contemporary health information and traditional Chinese medicine assessment when developing a treatment plan.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, two women presenting with the same diagnosis may have very different underlying patterns.
For example, recurrent vaginal symptoms may present alongside patterns involving Damp Heat, Spleen Qi deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation, Kidney deficiency or a combination of several patterns.
Understanding these individual presentations helps guide a personalised treatment approach rather than simply treating a diagnosis label.
Frequently asked questions
What is the vaginal microbiome?
The vaginal microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that naturally live within the vaginal environment.
A healthy microbiome is generally dominated by beneficial Lactobacillus species, although the composition of the microbiome can change over time in response to hormonal, lifestyle and health-related factors.
Why do I keep getting thrush or BV?
Recurrent vaginal symptoms can occur for many reasons, and it is not always possible to understand the underlying factors based on symptoms alone.
Your practitioner can consider your individual history and discuss whether further assessment or testing may be appropriate.
Do I need vaginal microbiome testing?
Not necessarily.
Testing is not required for everyone and recommendations are always made on an individual basis. Your practitioner can help determine whether testing is likely to provide useful information in your particular situation.
Can vaginal health affect fertility or reproductive health?
Vaginal health forms part of the broader reproductive environment and may be considered alongside fertility, preconception and hormone health where appropriate.
Your practitioner can discuss whether this may be relevant to your individual circumstances.
Can I receive treatment while also seeing my GP or specialist?
Yes.
We frequently work alongside other healthcare providers as part of an integrated approach to care. It is important to let your practitioner know about any medications, treatments or supplements you are currently using.
You don't have to keep putting up with symptoms
If you're dealing with vaginal symptoms that keep returning, or simply want a better understanding of your vaginal microbiome and reproductive health, you don't have to work it all out on your own.
Your consultation is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, ask questions and better understand what may be relevant to your individual circumstances.
We also offer a complimentary 15-minute discovery call if you'd like to speak with one of our practitioners before booking.
Whatever has brought you here, you're in the right place.
